The second running of the
January Gloucester 50k saw a high quality field run a figure of eight
course followed by 4 laps with a leg to finish by a canal. In the Men’s
event a group of 7, including some runners from the accompanying
marathon, established itself by the 6k stage. Russell Madams established
an early lead whilst more experienced competitors remained in the
chasing group which gradually reduced itself until only Dominic Croft
and Julian Rendall remained with one lap to go.
Just
after the turn on to the final leg Rendall increased the pace passing
Madams just after the 25 miles marker and seemed to be stretching away
from Croft who responded so that they were together by sight of the
finish. Over the 100m they agreed to share the honours and ran in joint
winners of this first event in the IAU 50k Trophy 2009 selection race in
3:09:08.
The
Women’s race saw Heather Foundling-Hawker return from injury to sustain
a steady race finishing in 3:41:11 some nine minutes in front of locally
based Angie Sadler whose 3:50:33 saw her well under her target time of 4
hours.
